Protesters, police clash in Howrah during march to DM’s office

Tension gripped parts of Howrah on Thursday afternoon after a protest march to the district magistrate’s office against central and state government policies spiralled into violence. The agitation was called by the West Bengal Basti Development Committee, drawing a large number of protesters to the area.

Police had erected heavy barricades to prevent the marchers from advancing towards the district magistrate’s office. As protesters attempted to breach the barricades, heated arguments broke out, soon escalating into physical scuffles marked by pushing and shoving between the two sides.

After being stopped, the protesters refused to disperse and instead climbed onto the barricades, continuing to raise slogans. They alleged that government policies were anti-settlement residents and said the agitation would continue until their demands were addressed.

The situation remained tense as security was intensified in the area. A large police force along with Rapid Action Force units was deployed, and all entry points to the district magistrate’s office were secured to prevent further escalation.
